Who's Harvey Baker?

well... it's a pseudonym that Alan (the bass player) used to use for when he was going to get famous....

The Harvey bit comes from the film of the same name starring James Stewart. If you haven't seen it, it's about a man who drinks a bit too much and whose friend is a six foot invisible rabbit. Of course all the townsfolk think he's seeing things because of the drink - but is he? Anyway Alan got rather taken with this all those years ago and needed a first name to go in front of Baker. And so why Baker you may ask? Well, his full name is Alan Weight and when he was old enough to start booking restaurant reservations and the like, the conversation would go something like this....

Alan rings restaurant to make a booking and restaurateur picks up phone:

Scenario 1

"Hello, I'd like to make a booking for 2 at 7pm next Wednesday please"

"Certainly Sir, what name?"

"Weight"

"White?"

"No, Weight"

"Wright?"

"No, Weight"

"Ah, and how do you spell that Sir, W-A-I...."

"No, W-E-I-G-H-T"

Slight pause then restauranteur starts to spell slower as though unsure "W-E-I-T"

"No, Weight - as in Heavy"

"Heavy...? Oh I see Sir, very good Sir, I think I've got it. See you at 7pm next Wednesday".

Scenario 2

"Hello, I'd like to make a booking for 2 at 7pm next Wednesday please"

"Certainly Sir, what name?"

"Weight"

.............   there's a long pause and eventually, Alan says:

"Hello?"

"Hello Sir? Are you ready now?"

" er... what for?"

" You said to wait Sir...?"

Whereas... if you say your name's Baker, it goes like this:

Scenario 3

"Hello, I'd like to make a booking for 2 at 7pm next Wednesday please"

"Certainly Sir, what name?"

"Baker"

"Thank you Sir. See you at 7pm next Wednesday"

So there you go! And sort of a slight subtext, as there is no individual in the band called Harvey Baker, you can't see him - just like the rabbit! We did try to think of a better name but, sigh.... you can guess what it's like...
